Powder coatings tested and certified to ensure safety, durability and full regulatory compliance in marine applications
—
In the marine industry, fire safety is an absolute priority. Offshore operating conditions expose vessels to numerous hazards, and of these, fire is among the most critical. To ensure maximum protection of people, structures, and goods, the use of high-performance materials and coatings specifically designed to withstand fire and the extreme conditions typical of the marine environment is essential.
One of the key aspects in shipboard fire prevention is the choice of coatings. This is not just an aesthetic detail, but a crucial technical element. Approved and tested coatings offer concrete guarantees of protection and durability, in addition to complying with international regulations governing maritime safety.
Choosing certified coatings means relying on products that have passed rigorous testing and inspection and are, therefore, capable of high performance even under extended exposure to heat. These coatings are formulated to contain the propagation of flames, reduce the emission of toxic fumes, and help contain fires by preventing them from spreading rapidly into sensitive areas.
A crucial aspect is compliance with the Safety of Life at Sea (SOLAS) Convention, which imposes stringent safety requirements for all ships engaged in international shipping. In this context, coatings approved by recognized bodies, such as the Registro Italiano Navale (RINA), represent a guarantee of excellence in terms of quality and reliability, in line with International Maritime Organization (IMO) codes.
RINA is one of the most authoritative international organizations in the ship classification and certification of materials and equipment for maritime transport. It works on behalf of more than 100 flag states, verifying the compliance of materials used on board ships to rigorous technical standards.
RINA-certified coatings must meet the requirements of the IMO Fire Test Code (FTP Code) and the MED Directive 2014/90/EU. The certification pathway includes two core modules: Module B, which certifies product type conformity, and Module D, which certifies the quality of the production process.
RIPOL has obtained RINA certification for two of its powder coating systems, developed specifically for the marine sector, confirming its ongoing commitment to quality and compliance with international regulations. As we recognize the importance of ensuring reliable performance aligned with the highest industry standards, we recently renewed RINA certification for these systems, demonstrating our continued focus on quality and innovation.
The MED Series powder coatings, both low flames spread, are available in hybrid and polyester versions, and have successfully passed the evaluation procedures required by the MED Directive 2014/90/EU and Regulation (EU) 2024/1975, obtaining Type (Module B) and Production Quality Assurance (Module D) certification.
In addition to safety compliance, MED Series polyester coatings are distinguished by their high resistance to weathering and corrosion, a critical aspect for the long-term protection of metal surfaces exposed to harsh marine conditions, such as moisture, salt spray, and severe temperature fluctuations.
Alongside these solutions, RIPOL also offers a MED-certified epoxy-polyester version, which is more suitable for applications in the marine sector where specific resistance to atmospheric agents is not required. This type still ensures good corrosion resistance, making it appropriate, for example, for interior furnishings and metallic materials placed in enclosed environments. In these contexts, it is still essential to guarantee reliability and quality in compliance with MED Directive standards.
Relying on RIPOL means choosing a partner that constantly invests in research, development, and certification. Our RINA-certified coating solutions are the result of years of experience and rigorous quality control, designed to guarantee maximum protection, long life, and full regulatory compliance.
RIPOL’s RINA-certified coatings combine mechanical and chemical resistance, certified international safety, and a versatile aesthetic range that is also ideal for high-profile naval projects.
